Prisoners

by Michelangelo (1536)

The Prisoners statue is intentionally left incomplete like a soul that has not been perfected. Michelangelo believed the sculptor was a tool of God, not creating but by revealing the powerful figures already contained in the marble. Michelangelo’s task was only to chip away the excess, to reveal. He worked often for days on end without sleep.

Matthew 6:9-13

“This is how you are to pray:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10     your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
11     Give us today our daily bread;
12     and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
13     and do not subject us to the final test,
but deliver us from the evil one.
